Statement

I have come to a realization about myself and my art. I am impatient and I have need for instant gratification. I get frustrated with time consuming traditional techniques and want to skip ahead to the end. It is for these reasons that I am a series artist. I like to experiment with new ideas until I am satisfied with the result then I move on to a new one. Sometimes the result can lead the next series. The inspiration for a lot my work is in the trying of the new techniques. Having freedom of expression and not being limited to one style of making art are paramount to my identity as an artist.

Reviews
“Michael Grine‘s Liquid will spill through 40AU this month. Grine’s works can be thought of as process-based abstract 3D paintings, or perhaps colorful, painterly sculptures. Here, the artist is experimenting with material distortions of paint and plastic resin, emphasizing both the decision-making aspect of art-making, but also the art of the accident.” excerpt from - “October’s First Saturday event is scary-good” Nashville Scene: October 2014

“...Most of Grine’s paintings in acrylic on wood panel or canvas are intimate in size and possessed of an almost primitive-seeming purity of intention akin to homespun American abstract pioneers like Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, and Georgia O’Keeffe... At this late date in post modern art history, these qualities imbue his paintings with a refreshing sense of integrity. Since no two of his compositions resemble one another, one could never accuse Grine of cultivating a logo-like “signature style,” for the art market. Rather, he embarks on each painting as though inventing abstract art all over again with each new composition... Always a little offbeat, Michael R. Grine’s paintings exemplify the freewheeling essence of the New Abstraction.” - excerpt from - Byron Coleman - Gallery & Studio Magazine - Jun/Jul/Aug 2013 - Vol. 15 No. 5

“...[Michael Grine’s] new exhibit, Halt!, at Picture This on 5th in The Arcade is kind of a big deal for the artist. Grine’s work features thick layers of painterly abstraction poised between the purposeful composing of graphic design and the artist’s obvious attraction to let-it-fly, paint-splatter expressionism.” - excerpt from - Joe Nolan - NashvilleScene.com - May 17, 2012 - Today’s Critic’s Pick
